Music: Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics: Lynn Ahrens
Book: Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens
The one Ahrens & Flaherty show I originally had no interest in, but now that I’ve previewed [and listened in full] to some tracks to decide on what to post at YDB today, I’d like to have a full listen when I have some free time this weekend. It doesn’t sound absolutely outstanding like their other work, but I really enjoyed this song and liked some others.
I’m always saying ‘Metaphor, metaphor!’ The lyrics aren’t ‘Look how old we are,’ the lyric is ‘Send in the clowns.’ Imagery that illuminates a character in a wonderful way — imagery you can sing. It’s ‘defying gravity’ not ‘I’m hoping I can fly and can get off the ground.’ I hate the expression ‘a hook,’ but … It’s not a hook, it’s a metaphor. Something poetic that takes the emotional state of the character and lifts it into song.

I am MOST DEFINITELY still planning on doing that Broadway [musicals] live stream I “pitched” a couple months ago.
I’ve been thinking about it a lot, actually — even started making lists for a few themes. Alas, I’ve been working a bit more lately and there’s a lot going on in relation to my family. With that said, I’d bet that there’ll be an introduction type of post in the next month or two. As I stated in my “pitch” post: the first [or second?] post will be asking for recommendations as I’d hate to miss sharing something great simply because I personally forgot about it. We don’t want a show featuring first songs without “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” because I had a brainfart moment, do we?
No. We do not.
